In 1965, 17-year-old high school student Randy Gardner stayed awake for 264 hours to see how to deal with sleeplessness. On the second day, his eyes stopped focusing. Next, he lost the ability to _____7_____ objects by touch. By day three, Gardner was moody and not controlled. At the end of the experiment, he had problems with short-term memory and started hallucinating (幻觉). Although Gardner recovered without _____8_____ during the recovery process, for others, sleeplessness can cause hormone (激素) imbalance, illness, and even death. When we lose sleep, mood, and reaction time are affected. It will also cause more diseases.

Why does sleeplessness become such a great pain? Scientists think the answer lies with the gathering of waste products in the brain. During our waking hours, our cells are busy _____9_____ our day’s energy sources, which get broken down into various by-products, including adenosine (腺苷酸). As adenosine builds up, it increases the strong desire to sleep, also known as sleep pressure. In fact, caffeine works by _____10_____ adenosine’s chemical pathways. Other waste products also build up in the brain, and if they are not cleared away, they can overload the brain and are thought to lead to the many negative symptoms of sleep loss.

So, what’s happening in our brain when we sleep to prevent this? Scientists found something called the Lymphatic System, a clean-up mechanism (机能) that removes this build up and is much more ____11____ when we’re asleep. And they may also play a role in ____12____ the brain’s daily waste products. Scientists are still exploring how to recover form sleeplessness. We can be sure that sleeping is essential if we want to stay mentally and physically healthy.

It was yearbook (学校年刊) day and we were given an hour to sign each other’s yearbook in the  cafeteria (自助餐厅). I was president of the class and I played sports. When I sat down at a table, people started to come over to get their yearbooks signed and to sign mine.

Among them, a weak boy with ugly teeth and thick glasses kept shaking. I had seen him around, and I knew he was always ___13___. He didn’t seem sure of himself, and was so pale that it hurt us to look at him.

He came up and asked me ___14___,“Can you sign this?” I look his yearbook but I didn’t know what to write. I saw that there was the name “Ricky Sanders” written on the front of it. So I wrote: Ricky.

I think you’re a really nice kid, and I hope you have lots of fun in your summer vacation. Signature: Will (Sign your name here)

I put down the yearbook and turned around to get some signatures from some of my friends when I noticed my yearbook was gone. I saw that Ricky had sat down with my yearbook. “What are you doing?” I asked him. He looked up calmly and ___15___ said “Sign!”

My friends laughed loudly at once, and I saw that he was carefully trying to put a signature in my yearbook. He hadn’t even finished the “R” yet. I thought for a while and ___16___ to let him sign.

It took him nearly five minutes to sign and when I got my yearbook back, there was a very shaky “RICKY”. He hugged his year book and smiled. I couldn’t help but smile back at him. In that moment, my attitude(态度) changed completely.

I gave him a high five and suddenly ___17___ at my table wanted his signature. He was asked politely to write in their yearbooks and the signature pages of his yearbook were filed up. He was smiling so big that it lit up the whole room.

I changed schools the next year, and I never saw Ricky again. ___18___, I will never forget the day that he became the most popular guy in school. Whenever I’m sad, I still look back at that yearbook.
